A group of my friends entered Microsoft Citizenship’s Youthspark Challenge for Change for which they had to find a way to initiate change in their community.

They decided to make use of their Computer Science skills and came up with the idea for an app. This app, Bystanders to Upstanders, allows people to complete small challenges that promote volunteer work and community involvement that raises money for charities. Upstanders earn virtual currency, which sponsors will match in donations. There are many different challenges to complete (such as organizing a drive or giving out free hugs - because who doesn’t love hugs? :D), which you can choose from based on your preferences. There is also an option for users to interact with other upstanders and to see what people around the world are doing with the help from photo and video submissions.

If they win this challenge, they will receive money to help them create this app and get their project started.

I would really appreciate it if you guys could take a few minutes of your time to watch the video and vote for them here. You only need to enter your email address, and you can vote once per day from today up until June 24th.

I met these people this past school year, and they’re a great group of genuine, ambitious, and passionate people who are going to do great things. Even if they don’t win the challenge, they’re going to make this dream a reality, but it would be great if they could get some financial help.

So I’m working on this project with a few friends at UCSD and we could really use a signal boost. That was the most confused I’ve been in a while. I woke up at about 5:15AM, but I didn’t realize what time it was. Instead I thought, “Oh good, the sun hasn’t set yet,” but it had already RISEN. Now look who gets to study until his 3PM final. :(
